During my 40 year career in transportation, 32 as the President/CEO of four passenger railcar
companies and two major urban transit agencies, I have been fortunate to have had several
good mentors that impacted my leadership beliefs and principles that shaped and developed
my management style. I have also been fortunate to have had some great staff that formed
the senior management teams that led to winning and the achievements or successes we
enjoyed.
I have developed a reputation for taking on difficult business problems, which I
viewed as management challenges, and my greatest joy has been winning as a team. As a
former college athlete, to use a sports cliché, my winning or success during my career has been
largely attributed to getting the right people on the field. But this is not always an easy task. As
former GE Chairman Jack Welch noted in his book, Winning, hiring good people is hard, hiring
great people is brutally hard. I have been fortunate to have had some great people around me.
This section lists some of the major project achievements and business successes my
management team(s) and I enjoyed. Whether it was turning around underperforming passenger
railcar manufacturing operations, planning and constructing major new public transit capital
infrastructure, improving vehicle reliability, or installing new business process control systems, the feeling of success or winning never gets old.
